Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
