Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
